7 | SENSING

A little girl hears a frog croaking. She starts looking for it. Where is it? She can hear it and listens to how it moves around. What she does not know, is that under the paving are 33 loudspeakers, playing the recordings of croaking frogs. The girl is deeply concentrated. She wonders and pays interest to the place and experiences the relation between nature and city. Not so consciously at first. She is simply sensing. She tells others about her experience and they might go visit the place or share similar experiences from other places. The experience of dialogue and recognition. Consciousness arises. A reflection. The city is an experience – of nature.

The city should make you wonder and surprise you. Wonder leads to recognition and new knowledge which can be shared with others. An experience of a particular atmosphere, where city and nature are united through the perception of such things as sounds.

Process urbanism requires spaces for play and movement. When playing, we step out of the everyday life, into a temporary world, which only belongs to the game, with its own rules and spatiality. We want urban spaces for playing and wondering people. By playing and wondering, opportunities for new insights are created. When designing the new SEB urban space, our aim was to activate the body though a variety of levelling. By Copenhagen standards, these changes of level are rather dramatic. They challenge the body and the surrounding heavy traffic, the noise and the huge and heavy buildings.

A new blend of culture, banking, nature, plants and terrain has been created. Here, playing is a natural choice. Skateboarders, roller skating and joggers side by side bankers eating lunch and people just strolling through the urban space, above the normal city level and with a view of harbour, the sky and the plants.

Process urbanism, just like physics, is engaged with what we can say about nature. The urban spaces accumulate times and events. Sensuous experiences leave memories which are recalled by new sensuous experiences. The meaning of the old memories changes along with new sensuous experiences. Memories blend with new experiences in an attempt of understanding the world and ourselves in the world.

7 | SANSNING

En lille pige hører en frø kvække. Hun giver sig til at leder efter den. Hvor er den? Hun kan høre den og lytter sig til, at den bevæger sig rundt-  i rummet. Hvad hun ikke ved, er, at der under belægningen sidder 33 højtalere, som afspiller optagelser af kvækkende frøer. Pigen er dybt koncentreret. Hun undrer sig og fatter interesse for stedet og hun oplever forholdet mellem by og natur. Først ikke så bevidst. Hun sanser bare. Hun fortæller andre om sin oplevelse, de besøger måske stedet eller har lignende fortællinger fra andre steder. Oplevelsen bliver til dialog og erkendelse. Nu opstår en bevidsthed. En refleksion. Byen er en oplevelse – af natur.

Byen skal undre og forundre. Undring bringer erkendelse og ny viden, der kan deles med andre. En oplevelse af en stemning, en særlig atmosfære, hvor by og natur forenes gennem sansning af bla lyde.

Procesurbanismen fordrer byrum til leg og til bevægelse. I legen træder vi uden for hverdagen, ind i en midlertidig verden, der kun tilhører legen selv, med egne regler og egen rumlighed. Vi ønsker byrum til det legende og undrende menneske. Ved at lege og undre sig, åbnes muligheder for ny indsigt. Med SEBs byrum er målet at aktivere kroppen gennem niveauskift. For København et mere dramatisk niveauskift, der udfordrer kroppen og omgivelsernes voldsomme biltrafik, støj og store massive bygninger.

En ny blanding af kultur, bankvirksomhed, natur, planter og terræn. Legen er det naturlige valg. Skatere, rulleskøjter og kondiløbere side om side med bankfolk, der spiser frokost og andre, der bare slentre gennem rummet, op over byens normalterræn med udsyn til havn, himmel og planter.

Procesurbanisme beskæftiger sig på samme måde som fysikken, med hvad vi kan sige om naturen.

Byrummene akkumulerer tid og begivenheder. Sansede oplevelser efterlader erindringsbilleder, der bliver fremkaldt ved nye sanseoplevelser. Betydningen af de gamle erindringsbilleder skifter afhængigt af det nye, der sanses. Minder blander sig med nye oplevelser i et forsøg på at forstå verden og os selv i verden.
